From Humble Streets to International Spotlight: The Circus Lion’s Fierce Climb

In the heart of Western Sydney, Tigran Tovmasian embarked on a filmmaking journey that transformed personal struggles into a poignant narrative. His debut project, The Circus Lion, presents the story of Samvel, a young wrestler seeking escape through Australia's national team, only to confront his inner demons.

Tigran, both actor and drama teacher, drew from his Blacktown upbringing, guided by the determination of immigrant parents. His experience shaped the film, casting his students to showcase that determination and authenticity are key to creative success.

Creating Through Grit and Determination

Tigran's fervor led him to enlist esteemed Australian actors such as Frances Duca, Kelsey Jeanell, and Panda Likoudis, who embraced his vision after reading the script and engaging in personal discussions. Their involvement was a testament to the film's potential.

The production journey was marked by significant personal investment. Tigran, who wrote, directed, produced, and acted in the film, fueled the project financially and emotionally. Facing grueling 16-hour workdays, he persevered without external funding, taking risks to tell his story.

Commitment permeated the set, with actors undergoing intense training for authenticity. Tigran's dedication sometimes bordered on perilous, filming in harsh conditions and embodying the physical demands of a wrestler.

From Local Roots to Global Dreams

Tigran's film isn't just a local narrative; it carries global ambitions. Submitted to prestigious festivals like Sundance and Flickerfest, the film showcases an Armenian-inspired soundtrack by Arman Aloyan, aiming to resonate internationally.

His future projects, Papik and The Mountain Men, promise to expand his storytelling repertoire, focusing on themes of war and masculinity through a personal lens.

Championing Diverse Narratives

Rejecting traditional industry pathways, Tigran's work captures authentic slices of life. His aim is to highlight genuine stories and communities, challenging skepticism with determination and belief in his artistic vision.

“Real life, real people, and real places,” as Tigran describes, are what he seeks to portray through his films, driven by a desire to connect with audiences on a deeper level.

A Continuing Journey to Share Stories

As Tigran's film gains traction, he remains committed to his goal of amplifying underrepresented voices. With each new project, he builds a body of work dedicated to bringing narratives from Western Sydney to an international audience.

Tigran views The Circus Lion as both a personal tribute and a professional milestone, while credits his success to collaborative efforts with mentors and peers who supported his vision. This journey marks the beginning of a promising career in storytelling that transcends borders.
